Deploying an application

The three ways to deploy, and what Redeploy and Update do.

On this page

Click New application on the dashboard. You can fill in the form by hand, or start from the catalogue.

Deployment modes

Docker image

Runs one container from an image, for example nginx:latest or ghcr.io/org/app:v1.

Images from private registries work once the registry is added in Settings → Image registries.

Git build

Clones a repository and builds it. The repository must have, at its root, either:

  • a docker-compose.yml: the whole stack is started, see compose stacks;
  • or a Dockerfile: one image is built and run as a single container.

When it has both, the compose file is used. You can switch to the Dockerfile on the application’s page.

Private repositories need a token in Settings → Git credentials.

Docker Compose

Paste a docker-compose.yml. Quasar adapts it to run behind Traefik, see compose stacks.

The form

Field What it does
Name Display name.
Subdomain The app is served on subdomain.your-domain.com. Use @ to serve it on the root domain.
Internal port The port the app listens on inside its container. Ignored for compose stacks.
Persistent data mount A path in the container, such as /data, kept on the host in apps/<id>/data/. See storage.
Custom domains Other domains to serve the app on, comma-separated. See domains.
Resource limits Maximum CPU and memory. Ignored for compose stacks. See resources.
Environment variables One KEY=value per line. See environment.

Click Create and deploy. The deployment starts immediately.

Watching a deployment

The application’s page shows the deployment live: the output of the clone, the build and Docker, with a progress bar for each step (pull, build, start, health check).

The output stays on the page after the deployment ends, so you can read why a build failed.

Redeploy or Update

The application page has two deploy buttons. They do different things:

Button What it does Use it to
Redeploy Recreates the containers from what is already on the server: same image, same commit. Apply a configuration change (environment, domains, protection…).
Update Fetches the new version first, then deploys it. Get a new version of the app.

What Update fetches depends on the mode:

  • Docker image: pulls the image again.
  • Git build: pulls the branch and rebuilds.
  • Docker Compose: pulls every image in the file again.

If an update goes wrong, roll back from the deployment history.

Changing the repository or branch

A Git build can be moved to another repository — a v2 next to the v1 — or to another branch or tag of the same one: Settings tab → Source, then Deploy from here.

  • Quasar first checks that the repository and branch can be cloned. If they can’t, nothing changes.
  • The code is then cloned again and deployed, from its compose file or its Dockerfile.
  • The application keeps its name, address, environment, domains, protection and data.
  • Moving to another repository resets the build choice to automatic.

Other actions

The top of the application page also has Start, Stop and Restart.

To delete an application: Settings tab → Danger zone → Delete application, then type the application’s name to confirm. This removes its containers and its data directory permanently.
